«[CON]TEXTO is an
exhibition organized around Art and Text, a combination of lettering and image
in which the subject of the piece is often an intersection between literature,
linguistic and philosophy. This is a configuration that conceptual art uses to
define ART AS PROCESS. The use of the written language, the result of a
“blurring” of artistic borders, was one of the most notable developments in the
visual arts in the 20th Century. It includes images “made entirely
from typographical elements” and is now accepted by historians as being an
important bridge between art and design. In adopting it as a tool of
self-expression, in its interaction with the written language and the image,
one examines the use of words or language (including translation), as applied
to many artistic mediums and genres - from painting to the book, sculpture,
installation, video and even performance. This exhibition questions the meaning
of the “invasion” of some disciplines by others, how one or more forms of
expression may combine and which messages are being transmitted to the viewer.
Besides this, other important themes that are also addressed include the naming
or titling of the work, the use of narrative in art and the literary
connections and artists’ aspirations. The exhibition is bases on the artworks
owned by the Galeria Luís Serpa Projetos and by the Coleção Serpa (Serpa
Collection).»
